Harmony Science Academy Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

The celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as a result of a statement made by President Lyndon B. Johnson, to assign one week a year to celebrate the culture and traditions of those residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Hispanic countries of Central, South America and the Caribbean. Twenty years later, in 1988, under President Ronald Reagan, the celebration expanded to a month, from September 15th to October 15th. September 15th marks the beginning of the celebration since it is the date on which the independence of five Latin American countries began: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico celebrates their independence on September 16th and Chile on September 18th. This month gives us the opportunity to recognize and celebrate national contributions of the Hispanic community to the American society.
