This form is designed for currently enrolled students. The closing date for this application is January 27, 2012. Applications received unsigned, incomplete, or after the closing date may not be considered for next year. | Congratulations Daniel Rodriguez and Alejandra Carrillo! |
We are pleased to announce that Laredo Harmony Science Academy has been accepted into District 32, Region 8 and Class 4A for swimming by the UIL. Our first ever swim team will be competing at the District Championships to be held at Weslaco Aquatic Center on Friday, January 27th. Top six swimmers from each event will advance to the Regional Championships to be held in Corpus Christi on February 10 and 11th. The winner of regionals will then advance to the State Championships in Austin later that month. Two swimmers, Daniel Rodriguez and Alejandra Carrillo from HSA-Laredo will be competing at this meet. They will be swimming two events each at the meet. Danny will be participating in 200 and 500 yards freestyle. Ale will be swimming 100 and 200 yard freestyle. The team is being coached by Abdul Mohammed. Coach Mohammed brings six years of coaching experience from USA Swimming and has had several regional and state medal performances. We wish the team best of luck.

The applications to Harmony Public Schools for the 2012-2013 School Year have been started and it has already exceeded 15 thousand threshold! On the day we started accepting the applications (January 10), we received almost four thousand applications in 24 hours.The application deadline is March 15, 2012.

Gabriela is a hard working student at Harmony Science Academy. She is very helpful to her teachers and peers.. When she has free time Gabriela enjoys listening to music. She is a very determined young lady which shows in her excellent grades. Gabriela plans on finishing high school and contiune on to college to become an astronomer. She truly is reaching for the stars.

Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is around the corner and we would like to inform you that Valentine gifts/items such as balloons, flowers, candy, etc. cannot be received by the front office staff for distribution as it is a distraction to both classroom and school procedures. Please do not send any of these gifts for your children as they will be returned. No exceptions.
However, we do have opportunities for parents/students to purchase Valentine Grams to support our third grade classes. Valentine grams will be on sale starting Monday, January 30, 2012 to Friday, February 10. Stop by room 126 with Mrs. L. Garcia to purchase your Valentine gram in the mornings before the school bell and after school from 3:30PM to 4:30PM. Valentine grams will be delivered on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday February 14.

| Oral Hygiene Presentation |
Kool Smiles will be presenting an Oral Hygiene Presentation on January 25th in the Main Cafeteria. The presentation will teach your child the importance of proper hygiene including the correct way to brush our teeth. Healthy eating habbits will also be included in the presentation. This is a fun and interactive experience for all. There will be a Healthy Tool Model and samples of healthy snacks and unhealthy snacks.
Everyone will receive toothbrushes!

| Laredo Bucks Fundraiser! |
Laredo Bucks will be hosting a fundraiser for Harmony Science Academy. Ticket sales will go directly to our activity fund, for the students benefit. This event will take place at 7:30 pm on Friday, March 23 in the Laredo Energy Arena. This is a great opportunity to not only support HSA but also enjoy a thrilling game as the Laredo Buck take on the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. HSA Laredo has arranged to take students to Mo-Ranch Conference Center located on the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country. Students in grades 7th– 11th will have the opportunity to attend this fun and exciting math trip. Space is limited and will be on a first come first serve. Cost is $100.00 per student all expenses paid. We will be departing from Harmony Science Academy - Laredo on Friday, January 27th at 4:30PM and returning Sunday 29th at 8PM. | Chocolate Sales! |
Dear Parents, We would like to thank you for all your support and words of encouragement this school year. We look forward to working with you on another fundraiser to benefit our students. We will begin our world's finest chocolate fundraiser on Friday, January 13th. Our school goal is to sell 1,000 boxes of chocolate. This fundraiser will benefit the school by providing extracurricular activities for students, funding various school events, and other educational opportunities. As a reward, the class who sells the most (minimum of 50 boxes) will receive an in city field trip. We will make arrangements to take the students for lunch and a movie. Special gifts will be given to the top five best seller students. First Place – Bicycle Second Place – Skateboard Third Place – Apple iPod shuffle Fourth Place – $20 Gift Card to movies Fifth Place - Ball Set (basketball, soccer, volleyball, and football) We need your support for this fundraising. Please encourage your child to participate for this opportunity to improve our school. Due Date: 4/13/2012 (for payment and contest) Payment: to the front office. P.S. | After Care Notice |
As in previous years, all students are expected to go to After Care if they are not picked up by 3:45 PM (for elementary/middle school)/ 4:20 PM (for high school students). There have been many students who remain outside or walk around the campus and are not being monitored by a teacher. For the safety of your children, we ask parents to support us in making sure students attend After Care. Failure to adhere to the policy will lead to issuance of DPS points and possibly Saturday Detention. Please note that students are being charged $5.00 per day for aftercare.

| Tardy Policy and Saturday Detention |
The school’s tardiness policy has been developed to emphasize the importance of each student arriving on time to school every day and remaining in the classroom for the entire period. Learning personal responsibility by arriving to school and class on time is an integral part of the school’s standard of excellence which helps prepare students for success.
Students should be inside the classroom reading for AR time by 8:00am. Please make every effort to drop your child off between 7:45am - 7:50am to ensure they have ample time to get to class. Also, if your child will be eating breakfast at school, please arrive no later than 7:30am. A student arriving after 8:00am must report to the front office and obtain a tardy slip. Tardiness to school will be unexcused, unless the student arrives to campus late for one of the following reasons:
• Personal illness • Attendance at a required court appointment • Appointment with a doctor, dentist, or other professional
For a tardy to be excused, the student must present a note from the parent explaining the one of the above reasons for the student’s late arrival. The consequences for repeating tardiness to school or class within 6-weeks are as follows:

Henry is a positive role model who enjoys peer tutoring and is always engaged in class discussions. He writes creatively and is an excellent literary rhetorical analyzer. Recently, several of his writing pieces were selected for publication for the school website.His willingness to learn new things and accomplish his goals will most certainly allow him to succeed academically and professionally in the future. Henry hopes one day that he will be a professor at a university. He is very talented in playing both the piano and Cello. When he has free time he enjoys riding his bike and playing soccer.

Nisha Lakhiani is a responsible, self motivated, academically outstanding student. She is a role model to her peers and enjoys helping teachers without being asked, as well as helping others. In her spare time she enjoys playing the piano and likes to read. Nisha’s goal is to attend the University of Texas and graduate with a degree in Speech Pathology.

| Digital Storytelling Contest (DISTCO 2012) |

DISTCO 2012 is part of a series of “Digital Storytelling Contests". DISTCO 2012 is an online contest where Students and Teachers in K-12 are invited to submit their original digital stories between November 28, 2011 and January 27, 2012. please check our website at distco.org for complete timeline and rules. The project has certain benefits for both students and teacher. It is a way of exposing and challenging the students in a competition where they can show their certain skills in multimedia, technology, researching, writing and creativity.

We had a great turn out with great people that spoke to our students. They were able to share great stories, memories, and experiences with us.

| HSA Welcomes Texas State Representative! |
|
Texas State Representative Ryan Guillen made a special appearance on our campus on Monday, October 21st. Representative Guillen, who serves House District 31 in the Texas Legislature, toured our campus and was very impressed with the enthusiasm of our students. Two student representatives, Jacqueline Caballero (9B) and Alejandra Carrillo (9B), both members of the journalism club, welcomed Representative Guillen to Harmony Science Academy and walked him on a tour of the school while asking questions and offering information about our campus. Representative Guillen interacted with several students, as he peeked into classrooms to see teachers and students both hard at work. We extend our gratitude to Representative Ryan Guillen who took the time to visit our campus and meet our students.

Harmony Science Academy is honored to announce the first luncheon of the year with Dr. Ray M. Keck, III on Friday, September 30th. Dr. Keck has been the president of Texas A&M International University for the past 10 years. As a university leader, Dr. Keck is making great gains in enriching university-level programs and standards. As a community leader, Dr. Keck is reaching out to local schools to show students the possibilities and the opportunities that they can create for themselves with the pursuit of higher learning. Students, parents, and HSA staff are very privileged to have this opportunity to interact with such a great community leader.

| A Parents' Guide to the Accelerated Reader Program! |
Accelerated Reader is a program designed by Renaissance Learning to promote reading from kindergarten through 12th grade. The program offers personalized reading quizzes on thousands of books on every grade level. After finishing a book at their own pace, students take a short reading quiz. These quizzes help teachers and parents monitor each child's reading level and comprehension.

Beginning in spring 2012, students will start a new voyage with the launch of the next testing program, called the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR™.
What is STAAR? STAAR is a more rigorous standardized testing program that will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) for elementary, middle school, and high school students. The new STAAR program will emphasize “readiness” standards, which are the knowledge and skills that are considered most important for success in the grade or subject that follows and for college and career.

Harmony Public Schools (HPS) begins the 2011-2012 school year with the opening of three brand new campuses in Houston and Austin, making Harmony the state’s largest network of charter schools, with 36 schools serving more than 21,000 Texas students.
I have the privilege to kick off the new academic year with wonderful news: Newsweek magazine named two of our high schools (Harmony Science Academy - North Austin and Harmony Science Academy - Dallas) to their list of the “Top 500” High Schools in America.
